Being a wee bit older than the OP, I have upped my protein intake since older people don’t tend to metabolize it as well. I also take Beta Alanine for recovery as well as a daily multivitamin, even though I eat a balanced diet. On rides, I eat an energy bar every 45 mins, and have electrolytes in my water bottles which I try to drink one per hour or more if it’s really hot. If I start flagging, I will have an energy gel, which gives me a good shot of… you guessed it, energy. On hard days or lots of miles I will use a recovery drink, like SKRATCH Labs recovery.

By keeping hydrated and eating constantly, I do not feel dragged out at the end of the ride. Like others have said, you need to constantly fuel the engine, or you will sputter in at the end.
