I need to figure out the bottom bracket. The bike came with the cups but no spindle. I had a nice Italian Campy spindle so tried that out, but the adjustable cup screws all the way into the bottom bracket shell, leaving no threads for a locknut. Could you perhaps be trying a Nuovo Record spindle with Record (thin, no rifling) cups? The thick Nuovo Record cups need a spindle with the bearing shoulders closer together than Record cups use, so if you try a Nuovo Recpord spindle with Record cups, the adjustable cup can bottom out, as you describe.
