Properly adjusted, your tire will take material off the roller. My tire always ends up looking metallic after a few weeks of training. I've had a few flats indoors, but never worn a tire out there. I recently 'upgraded' from an ancient wind resistance trainer to a similarly ancient twin-axled wind resistance trainer. Close examination revealed that my tires, over the years, have worn a groove in the original trainer's drive roller!
