Another option is the cycling brief. It's basically a sheer cycling short that you wear under whatever other shorts you want. I've seen them at a couple different lbs for ~$20-40. I picked up a couple last winter to try them out and they work great.

Agree about the briefs and they can be worn under any shorts you want.

The mountain bike shorts- or any shorts give me a problem in that they get hung up on the nose of the saddle. Not a great idea when you want to sit on, or get off the saddle and can't.

Nothing beats the cycling specific lycra shorts though. Come in normakl shorts or in the bib form. only thing is to get the 8 panel version and with a good liner.
