He must not be an actual Va Tech Fan, or didn’t understand you. It’s their official mascot, first used in 1896; it’s written in their fight songs and cheers. Having been to games in Blacksburg over several decades, I can attest that Va Tech is in fact quite Hokie.
They even build a lot of the campus buildings with Hokie Stone.
