I don't think it works that way. The chain will ride on the tips of the teeth, initially because of the narrow link on wide tooth, but then because at the larger diameter that presents, the teeth are too far apart for the chain to engage. Then as long as the chain doesn't fall off it gets to where a wide link coincides with a wide tooth and engages properly. AFAIK 9 thru 12 speed sprockets (and hence the chain inner links) are all 11/128".
