I kinda like Dahon's approach to put the batteries in the seat post. That way, when we park and want to make the bike less attractive to thieves, we just pop the seat out and take it with us. Voila: no seat, no batteries.

No need to compromise the main tube to give it detachable batteries; just use the same QR seat clamp to remove it.

Now, they just have to knock it off with the QR skewers...

I guess the only problem is that then we're pretty much OBLIGATED to bring the seat/batteries with us each time, as it's quite risky to leave it.

A side bonus is the larger diameter seatpost can be stronger without being super thick.
