Especially since the desired outcome is information. I personally doubt that a 40 year old injury has any bearing on present issues. Just about as many people find drops help their pain issues as find it makes them worse. There has got to be a less costly way to learn if a flat-bar form factor is twtg. And I do mean costly. They are looking at potentially having to replace all their drivetrain and control surfaces. And they want 'light', 'high performance' kit to boot. There is a reason that ALL road bikes are a drop bar configuration. A hybrid is another thing entirely. A used mid-high end hybrid might be purchased for what would need to be invested in time, sweat and cash in a conversion.
Likely a Cannondale SIX/13 Chippo TEAM model. Maybe a 1993 MERLIN EXTRALITE. Could be a 2014 S-WORKS Venge. I might do an old Paramount (got two) or my 1980 Raleigh 753. Several other options, but most likely the Cannondale.
I had no problem riding 15 180 mile days in a row before my accident.
