I agree that it's rather annoying when the common tool that most of us have doesn't work, especially when it seems like it should. Sorry about that, it's frustrating.

Does the quick release adapter pop off with the disc in place? If it does, just take it off to remove the disc. Otherwise, the other solution of a new lock ring and tool is your best bet.
