I also exclusively use an adjustable wrench for fixed cups. You have to use one hand to keep it aligned to the cup, and brace the frame in you armpit of the wrench arm to get enough torque.

A little sanding is also good advice, but if the shell does not engage all the way around the cup, it will need to be faced.
