Bikes: '23 Black Mtn MC, '87 Bruce Gordon Chinook, '08 Jamis Aurora, '86 Trek 560, '97 Mongoose Rockadile, & '91 Trek 750

All the advice everyone else has said plus you will need your brifters/shifters to also be three speed front shifters specifically. A lot of old derailleurs (especially) Shimano 9spd and below are compatible road and MTB, but if you need a triple up front you need a triple shifter and a triple front derailiuer. 10spd is when the cable pulls on road vs MTB for Shimano are different for the rear.
