Sometimes these noises can result from multiple tolerances adding up to a problem. Mid-cog chatter on an 10 speed cluster being an irritant for me. Anymore when I encounter something like this, I check alignment of the frame, rear drops and hanger first. At least one of these is usually off at least a little. I get alignment in order and then troubleshoot from there.
