Correction. It was the chainrings for the 18-speed FWs that were ground to powder. (I believe the FWs had a similar fate. That would explain why not one 18-speed FW has ever been found. Seems that they performed so badly not a word has ever been spoken of them since.)

Mr. Swann's Question Man answer, "... Particularly the 18-speed combos as used in the Tour de France; the mechanics will tell you the chainrings "are ground to dust."

And to this day, we are only half way from the old 5,6-speed to that ill fated 18.
