Chase/tap Bottom Bracket threads every time you replace BB?Or only if cross-threaded?
The previous guy who worked on my vintage bike cross-threaded the cup-and-cone bottom bracket to the point that it damaged both the fixed cup on the drive side and the bottom bracket threads. I have purchased a new square taper bottom bracket and tried to install it, but since the bottom bracket threads are damaged, I am unable to screw in the new square taper bottom bracket on the fixed cup/drive side. I can screw it onto the non-drive side with my bare hands, and the bottom bracket threads on the non-drive side are fine. I am considering taking it to the local bike shop to have a mechanic chase the bottom bracket threads, primarily on the drive side.
Do I have to chase or tap the bottom bracket threads on my bike's frame every time I install a new bottom bracket?
If I do need to chase or tap the bottom bracket threads every time I replace the bottom bracket, I am thinking of buying a bottom bracket thread chasing or tapping tool as an alternative.
I appreciate your thoughts and insights on this: should I take it to the LBS for chasing threads, or buy a bottom bracket thread chasing/tapping tool so that I can use it between the three bikes I own now and any I may buy in the future?
Thank you for your time and insights. 🙏
