I've started looking at pictures of people riding their vintage bikes and the chain is on the smaller chainring 95%+ of the time. I hardly ever use it and am probably just going to remove it off all my cranksets.
Old thread I realize, but I’m the other way around. I ride in the flatlands of SW Florida and basically have no use for the small chainring. My two ‘go to’ bikes have 53 tooth large chainrings. The cassettes/freewheels all have one tooth increments.
Edit: And I would add that I spend the greatest amount of time riding in 53 front 16 rear, going one tooth in either direction on the rear cassette/freewheel depending on wind conditions.
