I am old school old school. If I have what I need in the stash, that's what I use. I did have the luxury of selecting a 44 cm bar instead of a 38 cm.
The only reason I would use the drops in into a headwind.
They are a bit of an indulgence, but they work so well that I put them on all the bikes that I want to ride the hell out of. I do still have 3 bikes with vintage bars, but I find I ride them differently - more time on the corners, less on the hoods, still less on the drops. At one point I tried to get an idea of how the pros used the bars in stage races, but I concluded that people found pictures of them tooling around in the peloton less exciting than sprints or big climbs, so the pictures tend to favor drops and tops.
