I was gonna post that when I stopped by here earlier, but your first suggestion about a larger contact area has merit as well.

Overall my thinking is extenders shouldn't be longer than their cross-section diameter, unless maybe they're forged rather than plain steel.

Leverage at a stress riser can be a cruel joker to ride with.
