I thought DT Swiss at one time advertised that certain of the free hubs had a loud and distinct, RRRR ,rrrr, RRRR sound or something like mad hornets. Though some here have said DT Swiss are quiet. So maybe it's the different models do different things. For certain my Specialized Axis free hub is noisy and loud. And I suspect they are made for Specialized by DT Swiss. As they match pretty close to one of the DT Swiss models.

All my Shimano free hubs and freewheels have been pretty quiet. Though again, others here have said theirs is noisy. So different models again I guess.

I too prefer quiet. But since I ride solo most of the time, I'm not coasting a lot. So not much noise to worry about. In groups, then noise of many can be annoying. But not enough to overshadow the pleasantness of a good ride with others.
