Coasting while approaching walkers going my direction is pretty effective in alerting them.
I used to joke that with their loud hubs roadies didn't need a bell, until I realized that a lot of them use their hubs for this exact purpose.
They'll just briefly stop pedaling (for no other reason) as they come up on me or a pedestrian and there's no doubt that a bike is going to pass.
