I might disagree that from is any more ambiguous than location. Certainly I've posted from many locations. And although I was born and lived for a time in Chicago, I pretty much consider myself as being from Mississippi. Though they still kid me for my Yankee accent 55 years after I moved here. And my cousins and friends in the north accuse me of having a southern accent.

Nor does anytime anyone asks where you came from, are they asking where you were born. Otherwise that cop that pulled you over and wants to know where you came from and where you are going is going to think you are being a smart ass.
