We'll see how it goes with the shorts - what I can report is that with straight stitching clearly the secret is to go slow working on a small section at a time and stretch the fabric, the other stitches seem to accommodate the stretchiness naturally.
Where the re-sew is in this case isn't in contact with a particularly sensitive area, just against the thigh.
Re: the backwards helmet I wonder if it compromises how it performs if you need it to protect your skull against an impact.
It would be interesting trying to explain a head impact with a helmet worn that way to a neurosurgeon
