We need the test where they compare a 14-pound rim-brake bike from 2018 to the latest gen of 'aero' road bike. The test would need to occur in pack riding conditions with lots of aggressive surges and rolling hills.

After 50 miles of hard effort at 30 mph, the 4+ pound weight penalty of the 'aero' bike would cause the rider to be shelled off the back on a hill during or one of the hard accelerations out of a corner. For the remainder of the ride, the rider on the light bike would then be happily rolling along in the pack at 100 watts. The rider on the 'aero' bike would be suffering at 400 watts in a futile attempt to reconnect as the pack disappears inexorably down the road.
