You could do the same thing using a GPS (a smartphone is a GPS).

No one cares if you prefer paper maps (lots of people use them successfully) but you don’t really seem to know how a GPS can be used.

While things aren’t going to be the same for everybody, it’s not much of a problem to safely keep an eye on a GPS map. It might take some practice but it isn’t hard.
