I grew up near there and am very disappointed in the "tourist intense" nature of the Lake Michigan coast. This last summer I was driving around Michigan in a van, and if I wasn't speeding 10 mph over the limit, cars were tailgating me in anger. I consider parts of M-22 entirely un-rideable, as are most numbered highways.
That said, I was very happy with my bicycle tour of the lower peninsula. When you are in a nice place, there are few spots in the mid-west that are nicer. Many of the roads in from the coast are delightful to ride. I wish I could be specific with recommendations, but I am the kind of tourist who just "wings it", and looks for desolation on the fly. If you go off-pavement, be ready for occasional stretches of sand that 700 x 40 tires won't get you through. Enjoy.
Did you bicycle to the north or south of Ludington?
