Think of making a set of lugs for a frame as being about half the work to make a frame lugless... So this first frame with hand made lugs might really be considered your first and a half frame
Another way to look at making your own lugs is that they are cheap (material wise, I assume your time is worth as little as my time is), can be at any angle that the fit/design is best at and those usual first bike's mistakes are happening on the cheap to make lugs, which can be redone far easier than once you are about to attach the stays.
