Another way to look at making your own lugs is that they are cheap (material wise, I assume your time is worth as little as my time is), can be at any angle that the fit/design is best at and those usual first bike's mistakes are happening on the cheap to make lugs, which can be redone far easier than once you are about to attach the stays. Yeah, I bought an entire lug and tube set from Nova 15 years ago, not realizing that cast lugs can't be tweaked simply with grinding and bending enough to build a 50cm road frame. It is just those two lugs that are the problem as I was going to 73/73 for the angles and the seat stay lugs are socketed.
