Luckily there was a sidewalk to keep me safe especially when I rode in the dark to and from work during the winter months. Never once saw a pedestrian on the sidewalk in 5 years. The one way commute was 5 miles, with 200 yards of sidewalk.
Seems like a reasonable thing to do.
