You are probably using them wrong. What you are describing with Phillips is probably rocking or camming from using a Phillips in a Reed Prince, JIS fastener or just using the wrong pt size.
My experience is that JIS fasteners are what you find on almost all Asian bicycle components. A JIS screwdriver works best on these, and even works better than a Phillips screwdriver on Phillips fasteners.
