I would not suggest a tape wider than the rim is. But I do suggest a tape pretty close to the rim's width if possible. This overlaps with the other question, rim width VS tire width. IME sew up rims really want a tire whose width is enough to insure that the tire/rim contact is not only along the central but also along the rim's outer edges if at all possible. To skinny a tire , for the rim's well, and the tire only is glued along it's very bottom/central section. The tire can more easily roll off center WRT the rim during hard cornering. A tire that matches the rim's well/shape will allow for far more glue/tape contact surface and thus be more secure. A tire that is a bit wider than ideal is less a problem IMO. That tire will have the rim/glue/tape contact along both rim outer edges and be well secured. Might not look good... but far better a wrong choice than a skinny tire on a wide rim. Andy.
