Help identifying mid‑’80s Bianchi road bike (serial 690646)
First time poster, so if this is in the wrong place, please let me know. Thanks
I got this bike as a free - curb alert from Craiglist (California). I’m trying to pin down the exact model and year of a Bianchi road bike I’m restoring. The bike has been spray‑painted black, so original paint and decals are mostly gone, but here’s everything I know so far. I am very eager to try this bike and will restore to a functional state. I never had a steel frame bike so really looking forward to it. I am debating whether to restore the looks (as in strip down to bare metal or see if it is possible to only strip down the black spray paint in hopes of preserving original (burgundy?) color and stickers.
I can add more photos on request (lugs, fork crown, dropouts, BB area, braze‑ons, close‑ups of any remaining decals, etc.).
Frame and serial
- Faint “Bianchi” script is still visible under the black paint on the top tube.
- Under the black, the original color appears to be a burgundy / dark maroon red in spots (e.g., near the BB and cable guides).
- Bottom bracket shell measures 70 mm wide and is threaded, so it appears to be an Italian‑thread shell (36 x 24 tpi, both sides right‑hand thread).
- Serial number stamped on the frame: 690646 (aware that Bianchi serials are not reliably decoded, but including it in case it matches someone’s records or experience).
Components currently on the bike
- Brakes: Modolo side‑pull calipers, with Modolo America brake levers.
- Shifters: Suntour downtube shifters. 2x5 speed
- Rear derailleur: Shimano SIS unit : ITM (Italmanubri) drop bar marked “ITM – made in Italy.”
- Crank/BB: Steel road crank with traditional cup‑and‑cone BB (planning to replace with a sealed Italian‑thread unit).
Working hypotheses
- general styling suggest an early‑ to mid‑1980s Bianchi, likely around 1983–1987. Italian‑threaded frame , probably sold as a mid‑range “sport/club” road model. Burgundy/red under the black paint matches several early‑’80s Bianchi finishes (various “red” or maroon models), but I haven’t found a catalog example that conclusively matches this frame plus component mix.
What I’m looking for
- Help narrowing down the exact model and approximate year:
- Does the combination of 70 mm Italian BB, burgundy/red original paint, Modolo America brakes, Suntour shifters, Shimano SIS RD, and ITM bar ring a bell?
- Are there known Bianchi models from the early/mid‑’80s with those characteristics?
- Any pointers to specific catalog pages or regional model names (US/Canada/Europe) that could match this bike.
Thanks in advance for any clues—would love to restore this as faithfully as is practical.
