As I was cleaning the headset cups on my new 1950 Hercules, I noticed something that I don't think I've ever seen before, and which I know I've never noticed before:



The tube sockets aren't round.

Is this just a normal thing that I've just never noticed, or was it normal back when, or just a weird thing about these lugs, or what?

* Also, the bearing races in this 76-year-old headset look to be smoother than the ones in my 52-year-old back. Jus' sayin, neh?
