There is no speed benefit to wider tires. But if you prefer the feeling of riding on a sofa vs. the road feel of a true racing bike, then you would benefit from them.
Maybe true, but this is widely disputed, for example by all the pro teams who now ride on much fatter tires than just a few years ago. Are the pro teams all wrong? (and are they not riding "true" racing bikes anymore??) Could be, I'm not qualified to judge. But there's a lot of money to be made if you're faster, and pro teams are not (all) stupid.
