Bikes: All-City Mr. Pink

Bafang mid drive conversion on a steel road bike

I have an All-City Mr. Pink that I love like crazy. I did not ride last season because I had a new puppy and all my outdoor free time was spent with him. The season before last I had three different rides where I conked out and had to have someone come get me. I am a big guy, I have ridden this bike from 240lbs, which is where I was in 2024 and had the conking issues, all the way up to 420lbs which is what I weighed when I bought it. The shop I bought it from built a set of heavy duty wheels that have been bomb proof and I have put about 7k miles on it over about 6.5 seasons. Without riding last year I gained about 80lbs so I am back up to 320. I was considering selling it and getting an e-bike but AI actually steered me toward a conversion. I really like the idea because I love the look and ride of my bike. It really seems like I would get a much lighter and more powerful bike then I could afford buying a regular e-bike.

My question is has anybody converted a true road and or steel bike with the Bafang mid drive kit? I plan on doing the BBSHD 1k kit for the power, but mostly for the heavier duty parts. With the kit and battery it should weigh around 45lbs, roughly double what it weighs now. However my plan is it use a low level of pedal assist to compensate for the extra weight. I would also have a backup if I push it too far and conk out again, and could always get back to my vehicle. I ride mostly rail to trails and ride in and back again. I know I have to get some adapters because my 2014 model Mr. Pink has a PF30 BB, so I have to convert it to threaded, and I actually already ordered that part specifically made for the bafang conversion. I have not yet ordered the bafang kit or battery yet. From my research on Amazon it looks like the kit I want runs a little over $700 and another $320 for the battery which is a 52v 25ah 50amp LG celled. With that, an offset chain ring again specifically built for the bafang conversion, a new chain and some misc stuff I am looking right around $1500, maybe a bit less.

I have not yet seen a true drop bar road bike converted and was wondering if anyone has done it?
