Everything can be a joking matter. Most humor is based on someone being uncomfortable, and the child is going to be fine. And my joke is not about hurting anyone but the childlike enthusiasm of a kid whose dad has hotrodded something for him, despite the fact that the result was bad.
But you being insulting to someone you're speaking to is not fine, and certainly not classy.
