MPAOTD:

I've been working at a collision repair shop for a while and it's always surprising how well plastic bumpers pop back into place and hide damage, specifically to the rear body panel and impact bar.
We had a new service writer out once getting the estimate for a Nissan Altima set up. As I walked by, I could see the telltales of a mashed rear body panel and commented to the writer how it was probably a total. They didn't believe me, so I told them to open the trunk and sure enough, the rear body panel was pushed way in and it was a total loss.
I got rear ended in a hit and run in early February in my 2000 Tacoma (police found the person responsible) and got pushed into another person. Unlike your Porsche, the damage looks way worse than it actually is. The bulk of the damage was taken by the bumpers and tailgate. When the rear bumper got pushed in, it got pushed down slightly too and cleared the bed almost entirely. The brackets holding it got folded but the frame itself is perfectly fine. Tailgate came off no problem, swapped the taillight and painted over the minimal damage to the bedside to stop rust. Front end is waiting on custom headlights to arrive and the off-road tube bumpers to get back from powder coating before I tear it all down and fix it.
My truck is a highly desirable set of options so despite being 26 years old, insurance paid me out $7500 and it didn't total.
The story on the police report on the person responsible reads like a comedy of errors, it's wild.
