Smaller volume tires are probably less horrible to you skin & bone folk, but for fat-asses like me, it's a bigly improvement. I started my road bike journey on 17mm wide rims and 23mm tires at 105+ psi. Moving from that to modern, wide rims and 28mm+ tubeless tires, running at ~65psi? Yeah, there's nothing marginal about that. SO much less fatigue, especially over the course of a long ride, from your body not being the primary shock absorber.
