Wound up being a near-vegetarian day for me. The hoppin' john had just a little bit of pork stock and bacon fat in it.
I love Hoppin' John. Growing up we always had pork and sauerkraut for New Years, which I tried for years to like, but never really got past just tolerating it. It didn't help that on two separate occasions, some stomach bug hit the family right around then. Didn't get me either time, but it sure got everyone else!
So when I growed up, I sought something to have instead, and happened upon Hoppin John. Made a big pot of it for New Years. Loved it. Mrs. GJ, who generally loves all beans, told me she did NOT like black eyed peas. So much for THAT tradition. Haven't made it since.
