The winds weren't bad at all - maybe 13-15 mph. It's just that with my current fitness, I was barely ready for 100km. The hills and winds just made the ride a little more difficult. From the official startpoint, the headwind leg was from mile 38-50, and the big climbs were at miles 52 and 59, which were the main reasons I started from the 2nd checkpoint which put those about 16 miles earlier in the ride. Plus the 2nd checkpoint is only about 5 miles from my house. Confession: I had to walk the climb at official mile 59. My ride log (using RideWithGPS) says it was 12%. I don't remember it being that steep, but that's probably because the last time I rode up it was 40 years ago when I lived in south Minneapolis and I was in my mid-20s
