It seems to me that the rollers could all be worn or unworn and the chain would not contribute to excessive sprocket wear as long as the pin-to-pin spacing was 1/2 inch.

the rollers are sandwiched between the pin and tooth though, right? So wouldn’t wear on those create additional misalignment?
