I've been staying up until 12:30 or 1 AM most nights lately, but then I wake up at 8 anyway. I thought I might be less nap-prone if I went to bed early, so last night I went to bed at midnight. Dropped right off.
Then I woke up at 3:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. Ended up having to get up and go to the living room so as not to disturb Mrs. GJ. Took most of an hour to get sleepy again. Net result: Same number of hours of sleep, but in a much more annoying way!
Bonus annoyance: when I'm falling asleep after waking up in the middle of the night, there usually comes a time when my mind is letting go of consciousness and starting to wander. Then the conscious part of my brain says, "Hey! You're having those weird thoughts! You're falling asleep! That's great!" and then I'm awake again.
