Or why you’d bother using it with a modern hybrid bike.

There were also some hybrids awhile back that came with a sleeve on the steerer, on which an oversized (1 1/4”) threadless stem could slide up and down a couple inches. Don’t remember what that system was called.

As someone else has said, you’re vastly overthinking things and should just go try out some bikes.
