They wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell at winning or retaining their high positions if they weren't. This is just that kind of country. I'm willing to wager that
an awful lot of outwardly christian politicians are simply paying lip service to the bulk of their demographic. The tenets and beliefs of the currently-wingnut-status mainstream of that faith are a bit much for most intelligent people to swallow, unless they feel they have to, IMHO.
Just a thought.

I'm glad you aren't a republican and I hate to sound bitter, but..
The USA doesn't run the world- it's this kind of "(christian) man was given dominion over the earth" mass-solipsism that really bugs me about the fact that christians run the country at the moment. The world runs itself, and typically runs itself better where our nose isn't sticking into people's business.
Christianity, at its core, really is a quite nice idea (though bogged down by age-old mythic detritus) that preaches a path to peace and love, and that I can tip my metaphysical hat to. It is a collossal shame that it has been seized by and large by evil people that see it as a great fascia for a worse-than-the-masons secret society- a back-scratching, fake-smiling interlocked system of fiends who wield fear like a schoolmarm's switch and are no more faithful than the most committed atheist, IMHO.
Much like communism is a pretty solid set of ideas and socialism was a poorly-executed, ultimately selfish try at it, so goes christianity and its current ruling class's swipe at making it their tool for social terraforming and massive profit. Shame on them.
As an aside, any religion whose holy text has little-to-no connection to its original, god-inspired first draft due to some king's insane whim is gonna have a hard time impressing me.
Erk, sorry, didn't mean to get so crazy on this.
