From the title I thought you doored a cyclist riding on the sidewalk while opening a passenger car door.

I think this has been mentioned before, one of the biggest hazards of riding on the sidewalk is collision with people coming out of buildings. No-one expects something traveling at the speed of a bicycle.
I believe, also this is one of the main reasons sidewalk bicycling is unlawful in non-residential areas of many towns and cities.
