The 1xx series were entry level, recreational road bicycles, aimed at the casual user. For more serious cyclists and/or those who wanted a better bicycle, Miyata provided three distinct, upscale groups:the Grand Touring series, the Fitness/Semi-Pro series and the Pro series

The Grand Touring series were the 2xx, 6xx and the 1000 model and were intended for long, single or mutiple day rides. The 2xx series was lower, mid-range, with the 210 being the most common. The 6xx series was upper, mid-range with the 610 being the most common. The high end model was the 1000, in its various versions. There were a number of other Grand Touring models, including the 215ST, 600GT, 615, 615GT and 621ST to name but a few.

All the 3xx, 5xx, 7xx, and 9xx series models were intended for fitness and amateur competition. Two other unique models that fit this category are the 414 and 1200.

The Pro series was aimed strictly at competitors who wanted a high end bicycle. The most common were the Pro and Team models.

The above breakdown covers only the steel frame models from the 1980s and 1990s. Things get complicated when you try to include the non-steel models and 1970s models.
