Coaster brakes are never lame. The single speed ones at least.
I don't think the built in coaster-arm holder thingies are to prevent anything. A little piece of rubber inside the hose-clampesque deal does that. They are for added awesomeness alone. Well, that and it probably makes it a little less fiddley to get the wheel back on.
