+1. Heat/cold causes metal to expand/contract. As such, I find that I use barrel adjusters quite a bit while riding, or even before a cold early morning race. Perhaps on older bikes with fewr gears and wider spaces between them, it was not a problem, but with ten speed setups, I have found it quite necessary/useful.
