Yep, you don't keep removing/installing "master" pins, or more accurately, replacement pins. You gotta go to another link with a standard pin and remove that one. Then you need to drive in a replacement pin. Shimano chains come with 2 replacement pins. Best advice is to clean your chain while it's on the bike. I only remove a chain once...and that's to put it in the junker when worn out.
