Whether or not the clip accurately represented the majority of cyclists, there WAS a dude in a polyester suit on a cruiser. That was what the camera captured. News shows are, unfortunately, under no obligation to accurately reflect demographic realities in the images they use. The news director probably sent camera people out to some road and told them to come back with B-roll of the first bicyclist they saw. Unfortunately, this nerd probably just rolled into the shot at the wrong time.

News stories about happy bicyclists are boring. Cycling groups and individuals need to provide an interesting hook and invite reporters to cover it. Then we might get somewhere with newsy advocacy.

(and I'll stop here, because the "interesting hook" requires creativity, and I'm not feeling creative right now ...) (maybe, for example, a person who saves $1500 annually on gas and spends it on a new Rolex every year -- news teams love to cover conspicuous consumption, heh heh)
