Are you out in a suit and tie or just some scuzzy jeans and a dirty t-shirt? I, personally, am not worried about the guy in the suit (regardless of race) taking my wallet. I'm worried about the guy dressed like a junkie on the street corner (who in Madison is usually white by the way). I'm sure many people feel the same way.
Very laid back company so I dress in normal everyday street clothing. Old Navy boot cut jeans and a light sweater. Most of the time no ball cap and no urban wear, ie FUBU, Sean Jean, Mecca etc...etc.
