The pull direction refers to wether the cable follows down tube and goes under the bottom bottom bracket (bottom pull) or follows the top tube,behind seat, then to derailer (top pull). Can probably make the "wrong one" work but it will take more labor/parts.

Pull the lever that connects the cable on the derailer, if it moves outward pulling down it's bottom pull, outwards pulling up it's top pull.
